I have stayed 10 years of my life outside home.

I have stayed in 4 homes and when it came to food, there were days where I'd dread to come down for a meal.

The thing with hostels/PG/Mess is they have to cook for a huge number of people and in their mindset, the food which is the easiest to cook and cheapest to afford will do the trick.

But you see, water daal (lentils), no salt rice, and certain vegetables can’t even be pushed down the throat of people like us.

I still remember when I would see the food made, I would skip the meal and go to bed hungry.

But then I realized that not all the food is horrible. For instance, if the vegetable curry served is horrible, you can still have the rice and daal with something else.

I can understand the struggle between the food is horrible and I am hungry which is why based on what worked for me, I have shared a few foods that you can store to make your hostels/PG/Mess food a little less horrible.

  1. Chips

It could be a packet of lays, kurkure, or any other type of chips. This is what saved me from eating horrible side dishes prepared by my hostels/PG/Mess. Buy them in bulk and store them in your closet so the next time you don’t go hungry because of sad food.

2. Pickle

I am not even kidding when I say that pickle added life to my horrible food. There were days where having just pickle, daal and rice was my go-to food. I completed the plate clean and would love to do it again. Get your favorite pickle and add it to those days where the food just turns your mood off.

3. Take extra from your favorite foods

There are days where certain side dishes are yummy despite the looks of it. When you are aware that the dinner or lunch isn’t going to be great, you can stock up on it for later. I remember my hostels/PG/Mess auntie preparing this spicy chutney and it used to be given for lunch. I would take more of it and eat it for dinner so that my meals tasted better.

4. Eggs/ Potatoe

If your hostels/PG/Mess allows you to cook at least once, prepare eggs on those days. I use to do that whenever my side dishes were horrible. I would prepare anywhere from sunny side up or scrambled eggs. For those who are pure vegetarians or vegans, opting for potatoes instead of eggs would do the work.

Hostels/PG/Mess food isn’t that great but it is a blessing to have food on our plate in the first place. Yes, the taste isn’t great but instead of complaining, we can always find alternate solutions to it which is exactly what this article is all about.

I hope this helps you eat better and not skip meals.

Also, I would like to know if you too have such hacks, Share it in the comments below and don’t forget to subscribe to my blogs.
